2019 Sandel Summer Sabbatical - 13 Colonies (East Coast)
Family Goals: character traits/ life skills
MAIN GOAL: Shaping our kids’ mindset to be fascinated by the multi-cultural American life of humankind.
•To not just “be okay with” cultural diversity of people but to become fascinated and endeared to other cultural ways of being human.
(Not just Poverty, but thru science, art, engineering)
•In moments where it might easy to “be annoyed” that our subway is late, that they instead might take a different appreciative perspective to take in the bigger moment that someone is in charge of the brilliance behind creating and executing this complex system. To cultivate a gratitude and awe for human ingenuity.
MAIN GOAL: Learn to discern and balance the wisdom of personal safety vs. unfair judgement of human dignity
•Help encourage our kids to have the courage to speak to others they might otherwise never choose to talk to.
•And, by doing so, they will slowly become more comfortable being around others.
•Also- to teach them how to listen to our own internal spirit of discernment to feel either creeped out or at ease with the person.
•To learn to safely test our big assumptions about people who are not like us.
MAIN GOAL: To build Internal Locus of Control: Empower our kids to be challenged to learn how to think differently not just act differently because we want them to move from mindset of compliance to an act of thought commitment.
•to increase social awareness in any new situation
•to gain respect of the immediate context
•to increase behavioral appropriateness/contextual blending
•to build an awareness of social norms/ cues taken from the people around you- through immediate observation and awareness of the environment
Our kids know what we are about and they are on board with this crazy adventure.
